Madison Lumber Company was started in 1978 by Martin and Nancy Griffin. The company operated for one year from a rented lot located behind the Ennis Auto Parts store in Ennis. The office was an 8’ x 10’ building with a phone table and storage closet. In 1979 the SBA financed the purchase of a lot and construction of a retail sales and storage building on a 5-acre parcel located two miles north of Ennis on Montana Highway 287.

In 1985 the hardware store was expanded and an addition was constructed at the west end of the existing building. This new addition housed the equipment for the manufacture of components and press assembly of engineered roof trusses. In 1989 Madison Lumber Company expanded it’s services to include select northern hardwoods, specialty hardware and millwork.

In 1991 Madison Lumber Company was the subject of a marriage dissolution. The company was awarded to Martin Griffin; but Nancy Griffin was awarded an exclusive option for purchase of the company. The district court refused Nancy’s subsequent attempts to exercise the purchase option, and the company was operated for nearly two years under the sole management of Martin Griffin. In August of 1993 the Montana Supreme Court ordered the execution of Nancy Griffin’s option to purchase. A higher value for the company was established by the district court and the shares of stock of the corporation were sold to Nancy Griffin.

Upon settlement of these issues, Madison Lumber Company began an ambitious program of inventory diversification, pricing incentives, inventory management, and customer service. Negotiations with supplier and manufacturers and the commitment of Madison Lumber Company’s professional staff, were successful in meeting the company objectives of competitive pricing and excellent customer and product service.

The 8000 square foot storage building, erected in 1999, assists the company with inventory management, and allows the company to sell quality lumber products which are protected from the Madison Valley’s harsh winds and sun. Madison Lumber Company also offers selected building products knowledge and application seminars to our builder customers. The company’s on-going goal is the delivery of exceptional customer service and quality products at competitive pricing.
